Christie Stone Company was established in 2005 after Bevan Christie decided he would retire from farming, start his own company and try his hand at stone masonry. Bevan first became interested in stonework when he built a stone cladding for his new house in 1994. He used stones that the Mangahao River routinely deposits onto his farmland.
The stones have a wide colour variation including numerous shades of browns, greys and often a lovely red scoria. The natural formation of the stones is ideal for stone masonry as their sharper form makes the mortar gap smaller, creating a compact enhanced wall that is also nice to look at. These are the stones we also use in our residential or commercial walls, handpicking and selecting the stones ourselves.
While using river stones Bevan, alongside English stonemason Andrew Taylor, formed a style that suited both their abilities and techniques. This lead on to Christie Stone Company reaching further, and they travelled to Wanaka to learn the formation of Schist rocks, training with expert schist layers in 2007.
Over the past six years Bevan has opened his company to anyone dedicated to learning the trade of stone masonry and now has an experienced team of four around him.
